Why Screencap?

  • Screencap is designed with accessibility at its core, offering an inviting and engaging entry point into media studies and critical theory. The zine format ensures easy dissemination of information, while digital editions are freely available online for broader reach. Each issue includes a thoughtfully curated glossary of academic terms and phrases, reducing the need for prior familiarity and making complex concepts more approachable. Whether you're a seasoned scholar or a curious newcomer, Screencap bridges the gap between methodical analysis and everyday access.

  • At Screencap, diversity and inclusion are foundational to our mission. Our team is mostly made up of queer women of color, dedicated to elevating marginalized voices and challenging dominant narratives. Each issue features artwork from independent New York City-based artists, who share our commitment to fostering representation. Through our zine, we aim to create a platform that celebrates underrepresented perspectives and cultivates a space for dialogue and empowerment.

  • While Screencap is rich with critical theory and analysis, its presentation embraces a playful, vibrant aesthetic. Each issue features colorful, eye-catching designs with unique layouts and striking illustrations, offering a refreshing visual contrast to the scholarly content. This distinctive visual identity extends beyond the zine itself, shaping our social media presence and newsletter. Inspired by retro web graphic design, our visuals incorporate kaomojis and other nostalgic elements, evoking the early days of the internet—before social media took over how we connect and communicate.
